Taking your Dog on the North Devon Coastal Path  

The South West Coast Path is a great place to take your dog for a walk with spectacular scenery at every turn it isn't any wonder why owners wish to bring their pets on holiday with them. Dogs are permitted on the entire stretches of path, and providing that you look after them in a responsible way to avoid disturbing livestock,  wildlife or causing a nuisance to other walkers, you will be very welcomed by all in North Devon.

The North Devon area is a great place for a dog friendly holiday with lots of exciting smells and things that they would love to chase and play with. However,  every year there are sadly some accidents where dogs fall over cliff edges, For their safety please ensure all pets are kept close, on a lead and fully under control.

Like you, on a long walk, your dog will get thirsty. On most sections of the North Devon Coastal Paths there are streams and puddles that your dog can drink from, but other sections can be extremely dry for many miles - so take along water and a bowl especially if we do have that Indian summer everyone mentions at the start of every year!

If you are walking in unfamiliar territory, it is very likely that you and your dog may get separated as its unfamiliar to them too. It is a good idea to ensure your dog has a name tag with your contact number on it and holiday properties address. ideally your pet should be micro-chipped.

Being a responsible pet owner on holiday

A well behaved dog is a credit to its owner, But there are three things that still manage to give dogs a bad name:

• Dog fouling: Please help to keep our area clean and tidy

• Disturbing livestock and wildlife:  You are likely to encounter livestock when walking here. please ensure your dog is kept on a lead and under control...... remember if your dog is chasing livestock they could become injured. 

• Over enthusiastic dogs: Having a friendly dog is great, but few people will appreciate muddy paw prints on their clean clothes, and children in particular may find a large dog very scary, it is a good idea to practise training your dog to approach people calmly.

Variety of dog friendly walks in North Devon

We are blessed to have plenty of choices when it comes to dog walking in North Devon, with a variety of beaches to choose from and various countryside routes too you're spoilt for a choice of which ones to explore. Here are just a small selection:

Tarka Trail - one of the country's longest continuous traffic-free walking and cycling paths, and forms part of the Devon Coast to Coast Cycle Route. Over 30 miles of beautiful countryside is available to cyclists, walkers and dogs between Braunton and Meeth, using the old railways of North Devon. 

Baggy Point -  Spectacular Coastal and sea views with rugged coastline (Top Tip; Keep dogs on the lead) 

Saunton Beach -  3 and a half mile epic stretch of golden sands backed by dunes perfect for the family and dog walking

Putsborough Beach & Woolacombe - Picturesque golden beach that stretches all the way to Woolacombe beach, 1 section outside the beach shop is not dog friendly.

Croyde Beach - October - April dogs can explore Croyde beach and its beautiful dunes. 

Crow Point -  Lying at the tip of Braunton Burrows, Crow Point is a curved spit of sand which is at the entrance to the Taw-Torridge Estuary. The open views from here are simply stunning!
