North Devon Surfing Guide

SURFING.jpg Surfing at Croyde 2 - Tim.jpg surf-croyde.jpg
The North Devon region is known for its great Croyde surfing conditions from beginner to advance surfers there are waves to excite anyone. We have compiled a handy guide to surfing in the area to include Croyde surfing schools, Croyde surf instructors, safety water tips and detailing each specific beach in the area with history, North Devon surfing conditions and the best time of day to hit the water.

Croyde is one of the Premier surfing breaks in the UK. A great short Boarders wave and best surfed at low tide, Croyde surfing conditions produces a very fast wave. We have seen an amazing 20 foot swell running here in 2005 which made the National Papers. The only way to surf it that day was to use a Jet Ski to get on a wave! On a good day the waves barrel at low tide giving the rider a great thrill ride. Croyde Bay rests on the North Devon coast and the Atlantic swell drives in great waves nearly all year round. Croyde is a ¾ mile long and stretches between Down End and Baggy Point. Some serious Rips run here so it is not for the faint hearted. The RNLI patrol the beach Easter to October. Producing such a World Class wave it is no wonder that Croyde attracts many Croyde surfing competitions held annually. The Saltrock Open, Jesus Surf Classic and The Goldcoast Oceanfest.

                  Saunton Sands.jpg
Saunton is a Premier Longboarders wave. The two miles of flat golden sand produces a long slow wave. Saunton is best surfed 'On the push' and a couple of hours after High tide. It produces a good beginners wave and holds the longest ride! Many Longboarding competitions are held here including the Hotdoggers Longboarders championship and the BigBoy Paddle in June. International wave riders flock here to complete. Saunton has NO lifeguard on Patrol.

Woolacombe Beach is more than two miles of golden sand backed by sandy hills and the Woolacombe Downs. It joins Putsborough Beach at the opposite end giving the surfer 3 miles of waves. Best surf is 'on the push', around High tide and a few hours after high tide. Putsborough offers shelter from the wind when Croyde is 'Blown Out'. Both Woolacombe and Putsborough are excellent beginners waves, and Woolacombe is patrolled by the RLNI Easter to October. These two beaches work well when Croyde is 3 or 4 foot and a bit too big for a novice, this is an ideal choice.

Barricane beach is a small inlet along the coast from Woolacombe and is as popular as the main beach, and well worth a look when there is a swell running.

AWAITING PHOTOGRAPH TO GO HERE

Combesgate beach is a small sandy cove a stone's throw from Woolacombe. It offers a sheltered wave to surf. It is best surfed at Low tide and cannot be surfed after mid tide due to rocks. At low tide, watch out for the rips!

Our Lessons take place at Putsborough Sands, the safest and best learner beach in North Devon. Quieter and more spacious than the busy beaches of Croyde and Woolacombe, yet just a mile or two away. The 2 hour sessions cover the essential safety factors and take you carefully, step by step through the skills, building confidence, and showing you how to enjoy the waves. Culminating in smooth 'pop-ups' - getting you to your feet, using a technique developed to suit you, and riding the wave in… standing!

We have built a reputation that we are very proud of, for patience and treating every customer as an individual. We try desperately to avoid a 'one size fits all' approach, and make every lesson a really fun session. We specialise in beginners.
